The Duties of Churchwardens
Churchwardens are "Officers of the Ordinary', i.e. they are responsible directly to the Bishop of Winchester. They have many duties, among which are:
1. Representing all parishioners, not merely those who are members of the Church of
England.
2. Organising collections
3. Maintenance of order during church services
4. Allocation of seats in church
5. Keeping the parochial registers
6. Protecting church goods
7. Informing the bishop of any neglect of duty or other impropriety of conduct on the
part of the incumbent or the officers of the church.
Churchwardens also have a spiritual role in helping the growth of prayer in the parish, and are authorised to conduct morning and evening prayer in the absence of the incumbent.
